What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

When you visit us for an eye exam, we take the time to assess your vision and overall ocular health. Your appointment begins with discussing your vision concerns, health history, and lifestyle. From there, we perform a full set of tests to assess your visual acuity, how your eyes focus and work together, and how healthy your internal structures are.

This includes testing for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and screening for early signs of common eye diseases. If you need a new prescription, we’ll fine-tune it to match your visual demands, whether you are working on screens all day, driving at night, or staying active outdoors. You’ll leave with a care plan built around your needs.

Technology That Supports Your Vision

Our technology allows us to examine your eyes and detect changes that might not be visible through standard testing alone. We use high-resolution OCT scans and fundus photography to capture precise images of the retina, optic nerve, and macula. These tools help us spot early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.

Visual field testing allows us to monitor peripheral vision and detect neurological concerns, while iCare tonometry gives us a comfortable, no-puff reading of your eye pressure. For patients who wear contacts or are at risk of corneal conditions, our topographers map the curvature of your eye for improved comfort and accuracy.

Why Annual Eye Exams Are Essential

It’s easy to think that if your vision seems fine, your eyes must be healthy, but that’s not always the case. Many common conditions, like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, can develop without symptoms in the early stages. Regular eye exams are the only way to detect these issues early and protect your long-term vision.

Eye exams ensure your prescription stays accurate and that your eyes are working together the way they should. For children, this helps support learning and development. For adults, it reduces headaches and eye strain. And for seniors, it helps maintain independence and quality of life.

Eye Exams for Kids, Adults & Seniors

We care for patients across all life stages with age-specific exam protocols that reflect your needs.

Children: We provide gentle pediatric exams starting in infancy. Early detection of conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) or myopia helps set kids up for success in school and daily life. In British Columbia, children under 19 are covered for routine eye exams through MSP.

Adults: Annual exams are key for keeping your vision sharp, especially if you use screens regularly or wear corrective lenses. We assess vision and internal eye health, helping you avoid issues before they become symptoms.

Seniors: We monitor age-related changes and manage conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. We also offer co-management for patients undergoing surgery.
